The Dominican Peso (DOP) is the official currency of the Dominican Republic, issued by the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic. It was introduced in 1947, replacing the Dominican Republic Gold Peso. The peso is a free-floating currency, but its exchange rate is heavily influenced by the U.S. Dollar (USD) due to the country’s strong tourism and trade ties with the United States. The peso is subdivided into 100 centavos, and banknotes range from DOP 50 to DOP 2,000, with coins in denominations of 1 to 25 pesos. U.S. Dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, but all official transactions must be conducted in pesos.
