The South Korean Won (KRW) is the official currency of South Korea and is issued by the Bank of Korea. The won is abbreviated as ₩ and is subdivided into 100 jeon, though jeon is rarely used in everyday transactions. South Korea shifted from hwan to won in 1962, and since then, the won has evolved into a floating currency. While older notes depicted historical figures, modern banknotes feature prominent scholars like King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin.
